I was having breakfast last Sunday morning in a little cafe in Whitewright, Texas, that was spilling over with motorcycle riders. On the third Sunday of the month this little tiny cafe hosts an amazing number of riders. Even though most of them ride a, not very well known, brand of German motorcycle, it is a blast to rub elbows there. I struck up a conversation with my table mates who happen to be long distance riding buddies. They used the Scala Rider Multiset along with a GPS system when riding cross country. I knew that Maxim Honda Yamaha sold these but like most things, until you experience them you don’t know how useful they can really be.
The first thing they do before they ride is to call each other on their cell phones. This puts each number at the top of the GPS screen for easy access. The Scala takes care of bike to bike communications but if they become separated they can also contact each other by phone. They use the Scala to talk back and forth, arrange pit stops. listen to music and keep track of each other plus they can answer their cell phones while riding and wearing a helmet. It all interfaces with the GPS screen and the system is designed to be used with gloved hands. I had no idea how versatile this system really is until I listened to a couple of riding friends talking about how it had become a big part of their trip planning and riding enjoyment.
Getting out and hitting the road for extended rides are what motorcycles are all about. We are fortunate here in this part of Texas to have a number of different destinations from the Hill Country to the Ozarks within weekend striking distance. Going places on a motorcycle requires a bit of preparation and planning but it’s not too daunting. Motorcycles are considerably more reliable than they used to be and gone are the days when a full tool kit plus a change of fluids was a traveling necessity. There are a few items to check however.
First, Tires: a marginal tire around town is a bald tire after several hours on the road at speed. Good rubber is important for care free riding. Have a Maxim mechanic check your bike over. He is trained to spot problems before they become road side emergencies. Packing: At Maxim Honda Yamaha we have all kinds of luggage options to fit you and your choice of destination. From huge expandable tank bags that will swallow your whole wardrobe to saddlebags and convenient top boxes and bag liners. Maxim Honda Yamaha has luggage solutions to fit every rider and budget.
Plan Your Trip: Take a little time and research your destination. You don’t want to ride into the middle of a rally or wildflower festival and find that there is no room at the inn. Remember getting there is half the fun. The interstate may be the quickest but that state highway that looks like a squiggly line on the map, might just be more fun. Take your time, enjoy the ride, be safe and above all have fun.
I was bitten by the motorcycle bug in the 7th grade. I was sitting in my English class when a friend passed a booklet to me under the table. I would never be the same. It was the full Triumph model catalog for 1974. Each page folding out as a single 11” x 17” color image and each page displayed a picture, in full color, of one bike only. From the T150 Hurricane to the 500 cc Trophy Trail it was an exciting introduction into, what looked to me like, a world of pure adventure. From that time on I knew I had to have a motorcycle.
A school mate sold me a well used and broken Honda SL125 that he had ridden to death. I shelled out my entire college savings fund of $90 to purchase that bike. I also braved the wrath of my parents who saw in that bike the seeds of my destruction. I fixed that sad little motorcycle and learned a lot along the way. For the attention I gave it, I was paid back many times over. We lived several blocks from a power line easement that cut a path through North Dallas. It was a dirt bike highway allowing for miles of off road riding with only the occasional busy street to push across. It became my joy, my magic carpet and my ticket to adventure.
Many years and many bikes later I still get that feeling when I ride. I ride because I can’t imagine doing anything else.
